Does everything happen for a reason?

The question of the ages, and one I've been pondering myself for quite awhile. I've never been someone who believes that things happen for a reason, but lately circumstances have called me to question that. I've always been one who just thought things happen because they happen. But some things lately have called me to question that belief. There are three scenarios that really stand out in my mind lately.

Scenario number 1, my friend Jeff lost his job in Indiana. He was an engineer and was understandably devestated by the loss. Due to his job loss he was forced to move home where he searched for work and remained virtually unemployed for two years. This may seem like an awful scenario, however, while at home Jeff got back to his roots. He took a break from the grind of engineering and enjoyed life. He also met his now wife. In fact I attended his wedding in Wisconsin this summer.  Jeff is happy and living in a brand new state with a great job - this is all because he was laid off in Indiana.

Scenario number 2, my brother Johnny. My brother was also the victim of the economy and was laid off from the family buisness and moved out West to work for my Aunt while he figured out his life. Fast forward two years, and he is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, is happily engaged and is a sous chef and is passionate about his work, he also lost 148 lbs because he was happy, and healthy.

Last but not least, and the one I am most greatful for. After college I was a recent graduate, without health insurance and was offered a job teaching English to high schoolers at my alma mater. I had no plans on being a teacher, but accepted the job because the economy was rough, and I have a love of English I took the job. With the job came health insurance, benefits and a million amazing oppurtunities. But the greatest of these was the insurance. Within a year of accepting the job I discovered I had a brain tumor and without the insurance I would be in way worse financial constraints than I am now.

I had this epiphany in Wisconsin while watching my best friends say his vows...and I cannot help but think....it's gotta be a little bit true....everything does happen for a reason.

  1. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I think it is that way maybe 50% of the time. At least from what I have seen.

  2. While I don't believe in a divine plan of action at work, none of us would be who we are without every event that's occurred. It's up to us to make something out of it! :)
